Teen Orthodontics: Finding the Right Fit in Downtown Jersey City
Teen Orthodontics: Finding the Right Fit in Downtown Jersey City
As a Pediatric Dentist in downtown Jersey City, I regularly have teenage patients asking me "Do I need braces?" Here's my guide to navigating the world of teen orthodontics and finding the treatment that's the best fit.
When Is the Right Time for Braces?
The pre-teen and early teenage years are the optimal time for orthodontic treatment like braces. At around ages 10-14, most of a child's adult teeth have emerged, so orthodontists can better shape the jawline and alignment. Starting treatment at this age when bones are still growing allows for faster, more effective results.
I recommend all children have an orthodontic evaluation around age 7. Early treatment may be recommended to correct issues like crossbites or crowding. But full braces often don't happen until age 10 or later. When you visit an orthodontist, they'll take X-rays and molds to determine when your teen's teeth are ready.
Choosing Between Invisalign and Traditional Braces
When it's time for braces, two of the most popular options are Invisalign clear aligners and traditional metal braces. I walk my teenage patients through the pros and cons of each to determine what's best for their unique smile goal and their individual needs.
Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners to incrementally shift teeth into place over several months. They're less noticeable, but can only treat mild to moderate issues. Teens must remove aligners to eat and brush.
Traditional braces use brackets and wires to move teeth into place. They work for more complex issues, but are more noticeable. You can still eat and brush normally with braces. They tend to be more affordable than Invisalign.
Lifestyle factors like playing instruments and contact sports may make one option preferable over the other for your teen. I consider all aspects to make the right recommendation.
Anticipating Treatment Timelines
Treatment times vary based on the severity of the orthodontic issue. Mild crowding or small gaps may take 6-12 months with either braces or Invisalign. Larger spacing or bite issues can take 18-24 months to resolve. Complex cases with jaw misalignment may require 2+ years.
With traditional braces, I'll have teen patients come in every 4-6 weeks for tightening. Invisalign patients will switch aligners every 1-2 weeks and come in for periodic check-ins. I monitor progress closely and keep parents and teens updated on how treatment is progressing.
Caring for Teeth During Treatment
Orthodontic treatment requires diligent oral hygiene. With braces, brush carefully after each meal and floss thoroughly between wires. Use special tools to dislodge food particles. Rinse away debris.
With Invisalign, remove aligners before eating and brushing. Soak aligners in a cleaning solution every night. I recommend wearing aligners 20-22 hours per day for fastest results.
See me every 6 months for a cleaning and exam to keep teeth and gums healthy during treatment. Mouthguards help protect alignment and prevent damage during sports. Limit sugary treats and acidic drinks that weaken enamel.
